AXIOS - Welcome back to Burbs Bites, our new occasional feature highlighting bars, breweries, cafés, and restaurants in the Twin Cities suburbs.

Anoka's bustling downtown has plenty of spots to grab a beer, but head a block north of Main Street to find Ambi Wine Bar & Desserts, a charming wine bar surrounded by antique shops with a café-like ambience.

What to expect: A selection of appetizers, cheese boards, and flatbreads alongside an extensive wine and dessert list, with an emphasis on chocolate mousses, cakes, cheesecakes, and gelatos. (Beer fans can still enjoy one of the bar's 10 brews.)

Anoka test-runs downtown 'social district,' where adults can sip and stroll

The district, where alcohol can be taken onto public streets in a specified area, will be active for a one-month test period in the northwestern suburb.  

Anoka residents and visitors held up their plastic cups of beer Wednesday as a toast to Minnesota's first-ever "social district," where adults can take their alcoholic drinks out onto certain public streets.

Anoka launches ‘social district’

ANOKA, Minn. (FOX 9) - Anoka is launching the first "social district" in Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing patrons to buy and drink alcohol in public — but only in designated areas. 

The social district will encompass part of Anoka's downtown, including designated sidewalks and parks where people aged 21 and over can drink alcohol. Participating bars include Ambi Wine Bar, MaGillycuddy’s Irish Pub, and 10K Brewing among others.

Canvas Rebel - We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jess Pratt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jess, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?

Jess and Ythan Pratt wanted to help reinvigorate their community and they spent three years brainstorming ideas for how they might do so. One day it clicked – we were both personally passionate about wine and we wanted to do something that would build upon the momentum of Anoka, MN’s historic downtown district. As we conducted research for the concept, there was a gap in the wine category in the area and overall the wine category was rapidly growing.

Dog Friendly Patios in Anoka, Minnesota

Anoka is a hidden gem and one of my favorite places is Ambi Wine Bar which is right next door to 10K Brewing, another great place that allows dogs on the patio. Overall, Anoka has turned into a little entertainment district with an ice cream shop, Serum’s which has great wings, and Truffles and Tortes which is an incredible bakery that also features their desserts on Ambi’s menu. A husband and wife own Ambi Wine Bar it and it’s a super cute spot.
